Vermont weather turned gray and soaked across Burlington late this morning as steady rain swept across Lake Champlain and dampened roads along Interstate 89. Drivers moving through Chittenden County faced slick pavement, low clouds and gusty south winds while cool air held temperatures in the lower 50s.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, rain remains likely through much of the afternoon before easing into scattered showers later today. Additional rounds of rain redevelop tonight, with precipitation chances climbing back to 90% and rainfall totals potentially reaching a half inch in some communities.

Visibility may briefly drop during heavier rain bands, especially near Route 7 and elevated stretches south of Winooski. Wind gusts near 25 mph could also create difficult conditions for boaters on Lake Champlain through the evening hours. Residents planning outdoor Memorial Day gatherings should keep rain gear nearby as another batch of showers develops Monday morning before conditions gradually improve.

The broader Northeast remains trapped beneath a cool and moisture-rich pattern as warm air from the south collides with lingering Canadian high pressure. That setup continues producing wet weather from Pennsylvania into northern New England, though severe weather remains limited for now.

A major temperature rebound arrives by Tuesday. Burlington could surge from today’s damp 54-degree afternoon to highs near 81 by Tuesday under mostly sunny skies. The warmer air may spark isolated showers again by midweek, but longer dry stretches should return across much of Vermont.

Gardeners and allergy sufferers may notice pollen levels climbing rapidly once sunshine returns and vegetation dries out. For now, wet pavement and steady rain remain the biggest concerns heading into the holiday travel stretch.
