California weather remains chilly and gray along the North Coast this afternoon as thick marine clouds and dense fog hover over Eureka Bay. Headlights pierced through damp coastal air late this morning while visibility dropped near sections of Highway 101 north of downtown Eureka. Temperatures struggled near 49 degrees around the Eureka Weather Forecast Office, creating a raw and cool feel more common in early spring.

According to the National Weather Service, patchy dense fog developed early this morning before partial clearing slowly spread inland by midday. High temperatures only reach near 62 degrees today with light westerly winds developing during the afternoon. Memorial Day starts with another round of fog before skies gradually brighten later in the day.

Rain chances increase again by Tuesday as a Pacific weather system approaches Northern California. Showers may develop by late morning with highs cooling back into the upper 50s across Eureka, Arcata and McKinleyville. Breezy north winds Tuesday night could gust near 25 mph along exposed coastal roads and elevated ridges.

Drivers should remain cautious near Humboldt Bay and low-lying coastal highways where visibility can quickly change during foggy periods. Wet pavement and slick bridges may also create slower travel conditions during Tuesday’s rain showers. Beachgoers and river visitors should remember water temperatures remain dangerously cold despite improving afternoon sunshine.

The broader western United States stays warmer and mostly dry through Memorial Day, but Northern California and the Pacific Northwest become more active as Pacific moisture pushes inland. Higher elevations farther north could even see late-season snow showers by Tuesday night as colder air filters southward.

Long-range outlooks still favor warmer-than-normal temperatures into early June across much of California, though the North Coast likely stays cooler than inland valleys through much of the upcoming week.
