Michigan weather remains cool and gray across metro Detroit this afternoon as low clouds drift over the skyline and patchy fog slowly lifts from side streets and freeways. Damp pavement reflected traffic near Interstate 75 and the Lodge Freeway late this morning while temperatures hovered near 57 degrees at Coleman A. Young Municipal Airport. Drivers heading through downtown or toward the Ambassador Bridge should expect changing visibility through the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms may develop after 2 p.m. across southeast Michigan with highs climbing near 70 degrees. The strongest storms are expected to remain isolated, but brief heavy rain and gusty winds could slow travel quickly during evening hours. Conditions begin improving Memorial Day as drier air gradually pushes into the Great Lakes region.
Meteorologists are now tracking a sharp warmup through midweek. High temperatures rise from around 70 today into the lower and middle 80s Tuesday and Wednesday across Detroit, Dearborn and Warren. That rapid temperature swing will bring the warmest stretch of weather many communities have seen so far this spring.
Residents should stay weather-aware during the afternoon commute today. Slick roads and ponding water may briefly develop along I-94, I-96 and portions of the Southfield Freeway during heavier showers. After today, however, sunshine and warmer air begin taking control across southeast Michigan.
The broader eastern United States remains trapped in an active spring weather pattern through Memorial Day, though much of the Midwest begins drying out earlier than the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Severe weather is not expected around Detroit, but isolated thunderstorms may still produce occasional lightning and brief downpours.
Long-range outlooks continue favoring above-normal temperatures heading into early June, signaling stronger summer warmth settling into the Great Lakes next week.
