Cincinnati, Ohio – Drivers across southern and central Ohio could encounter flooded roads and rapidly rising creeks Sunday as multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms spread north from the Ohio River through the day.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, additional rainfall totals between 1 and 2 inches are possible Sunday, especially along and southeast of the Interstate 71 corridor. Forecasters warn isolated flooding issues may redevelop in areas already dealing with ongoing river and creek flooding from earlier rainfall.
Communities including Cincinnati, Wilmington, Hillsboro and Portsmouth face the highest risk for heavier rain through Sunday evening. Repeated thunderstorms could produce localized flooding on roads, low-water crossings and poor-drainage urban areas. Travel along I-71, I-75 and portions of U.S. 68 may become hazardous during heavier downpours, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours when rainfall coverage increases.
Emergency officials continue urging residents to avoid driving through flooded roadways and to closely monitor nearby creeks and streams for rapid rises. While widespread severe weather is not currently expected, stronger thunderstorms may still produce frequent lightning and brief gusty winds.
Rain and storm chances are expected to continue into early next week as the wet pattern remains locked across the Ohio Valley. Additional flood advisories or flash flood warnings may be issued later today if rainfall totals increase more quickly than expected.
