South Bend, Indiana – Drivers across northern Indiana could encounter slick roads and reduced visibility Sunday morning and afternoon as scattered showers and thunderstorms move through the region before warmer and drier weather arrives for Memorial Day.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are expected through Sunday afternoon, though widespread severe weather is not anticipated. Forecasters say conditions will gradually improve tonight before a warmer pattern settles in Monday and Tuesday.

Communities including South Bend, Fort Wayne, Elkhart and Warsaw may see periods of moderate rain and isolated lightning during the day, especially along portions of Interstate 80/90 and U.S. 31. While storms are expected to remain below severe limits, heavier downpours could still briefly slow holiday weekend traffic and outdoor events. Residents attending cookouts, races and lake activities are encouraged to monitor radar updates and move indoors if thunder develops nearby.

Temperatures remain cooler Sunday with highs ranging between 73 and 77 degrees before climbing sharply into the upper 70s and low 80s Monday and Tuesday. Drier conditions are expected for most of Memorial Day before additional thunderstorm chances return by Wednesday.

Forecasters say the next round of rain could redevelop midweek as humidity increases again across the Great Lakes region. Additional updates may be issued if storm coverage becomes more widespread later this week.
