Norfolk, Virginia – Drivers across Hampton Roads and eastern Virginia could face reduced visibility and slick roads through Sunday evening as scattered thunderstorms expand across the region following a foggy start to the day.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, patchy fog and drizzle will dissipate by midmorning before a warm front lifts north through Virginia and northeast North Carolina. That system is expected to increase shower and thunderstorm coverage this afternoon and evening, with rain chances between 50% and 70%, especially across southern Virginia and the North Carolina border region.

Communities from Norfolk and Virginia Beach west toward Richmond could see periods of heavier rain and isolated lightning during the late afternoon and evening hours. Travel on I-64, I-264 and portions of U.S. 17 may become slower during heavier downpours. While forecasters are not expecting a widespread severe weather outbreak, outdoor Memorial Day weekend events could still face interruptions from lightning and brief gusty winds.

Temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 70s and low 80s away from the Eastern Shore, where cooler conditions remain in the low to mid-70s. Additional showers may continue overnight before storm coverage becomes even more widespread on Memorial Day and Tuesday.

Residents heading to beaches, parks and cookouts are encouraged to monitor radar updates closely and move indoors quickly if thunder develops nearby. Additional advisories could be issued if storms become more organized early this week.
