Amarillo, Texas – Explosive fire conditions are expected to develop by early afternoon Sunday, with strong winds and extremely dry air capable of spreading flames rapidly across the Southern High Plains.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, relative humidity will drop to as low as 5 to 15 percent while sustained winds increase to 20 to 25 mph. A more dangerous corridor with winds reaching 30 to 35 mph is expected to form during peak heating hours, significantly increasing wildfire risk across eastern New Mexico and western Texas.

The highest danger zone includes Amarillo, Lubbock, Clovis, Roswell, and Hobbs, where any spark could quickly grow out of control. Fire spread rates will accelerate between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., especially along major routes such as I-40 and US-84, where blowing dust and fire activity could reduce visibility and impact travel.

Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Residents should avoid using equipment that creates sparks and secure trailer chains to prevent roadside ignitions. Emergency officials warn that response times may be limited if multiple fires start simultaneously.

These critical conditions will persist through Sunday evening before winds gradually weaken overnight. Additional fire weather alerts may be issued if conditions intensify further.
