Chicago, Illinois – Storms arriving within hours Monday could disrupt evening commutes across northern Illinois, with damaging winds and localized flooding threatening major corridors including I-90, I-94, and I-55 by late afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a multi-hazard setup is expected Monday, with the potential for damaging wind gusts, hail, and isolated tornadoes developing mainly between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. The greatest concern stretches from the Rockford area through Chicago and into northwest Indiana.
Rainfall will also aggravate an already sensitive river system. Portions of the Rock, Fox, and Des Plaines rivers remain in action or flood stage, and additional rain Monday could push levels higher into Tuesday. Low-lying roads near these নদ systems, especially in Kane, Lake, and McHenry counties, may see water encroachment or closures overnight. Heavier rainfall bands may focus near the Illinois-Wisconsin border, increasing localized flood risk.
Drivers should expect reduced visibility and water-covered roadways during peak travel hours. Avoid flooded streets, charge devices ahead of potential outages, and secure outdoor items before storms arrive. School and transit delays are possible Tuesday morning if flooding worsens.
Conditions improve late week as a cooler, drier pattern develops, but officials warn river levels may remain elevated through midweek. Additional updates are expected by early Monday afternoon as storm timing and severity become clearer.
