Wichita, Kansas – Severe storms are expected to develop across central Kansas by late Sunday afternoon, with tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail posing an immediate threat to travel and power infrastructure into the evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, the most favorable conditions for severe weather have shifted into central and north-central Kansas, with storm development likely between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday. The environment supports discrete supercells capable of producing very large hail exceeding 2 inches in diameter, wind gusts up to 70 mph, and a few strong tornadoes.

Cities including Wichita, Salina, Hutchinson, and Great Bend sit in the highest-risk corridor, particularly along and east of a line from Scott City to Medicine Lodge. Major routes such as Interstate 70, Interstate 135, and U.S. Highway 54 could see sudden travel disruptions due to hail-covered roads, debris, and reduced visibility during peak storm activity.

Residents should secure outdoor items, review shelter plans, and ensure multiple ways to receive warnings before storms begin. High-profile vehicles should avoid travel during peak wind periods, and anyone outdoors should be ready to move to shelter quickly.

Storms are expected to weaken late Sunday night, though additional activity may develop into early Monday. Further updates are likely as storm timing and intensity become clearer.
