Amarillo, Texas – A single spark could rapidly ignite grassfires across the Texas Panhandle today as strong winds and unusually warm temperatures combine to create dangerous fire conditions through the evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, critical fire weather conditions are expected from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles. Southwest winds will increase to 20 to 35 mph with gusts between 30 and 45 mph, creating conditions where fires can spread quickly in dry grasslands.

Communities including Amarillo, Dumas, Dalhart, Borger, Pampa and Canadian are under the highest wildfire concern. Fire officials warn that outdoor burning, sparks from equipment or discarded cigarettes could quickly start fast-moving grassfires across open terrain.

Temperatures will also run well above normal, with highs reaching the low to mid-70s across much of the region, roughly 10 degrees warmer than typical for mid-March. Amarillo could reach around 74°F, while nearby locations such as Borger and Guymon may see highs in the mid-70s.

Strong winds may also create difficult driving conditions along Interstate 40, U.S. Highway 287 and Highway 87, especially for trucks and high-profile vehicles.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure equipment that could spark and report smoke immediately to local authorities.

Fire danger is expected to ease later tonight as winds gradually weaken, though dry conditions could keep wildfire concerns elevated into the weekend.
