Chadron, Nebraska – The worst of the snow has moved out of the Nebraska Panhandle, but drivers may still encounter slick stretches and pockets of blowing snow through midafternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, the Winter Weather Advisory for Dawes, Box Butte and northern Sioux counties expired at 2 p.m. MST Thursday as the heaviest snowfall shifted east. Light snow will continue for a few more hours, though additional accumulation is expected to remain minimal.

Communities including Chadron, Alliance, Hemingford and Harrison could still see reduced visibility at times as breezy winds lift freshly fallen snow. Open areas along U.S. Highway 385 and Nebraska Highway 2 may experience brief bursts of blowing snow, especially in rural stretches.

Road crews continue clearing highways and secondary roads, but shaded spots and untreated surfaces may stay slick into the evening. Drivers should reduce speed and allow extra stopping distance.

Conditions will gradually improve later Thursday as snowfall diminishes, though cold temperatures could keep patches of ice in place overnight.
