Illinois–Iowa – The air feels calm this morning, but a fast-moving February system is set to flip the switch from springlike rain to winter snow by tonight.
Temperatures are starting near 30 degrees in the Quad Cities. Clouds will thicken through midday. Showers develop first, then thunderstorms become possible this afternoon and evening, especially east of the Mississippi River. Parts of Illinois face a marginal severe Weather risk, with hail up to one inch the primary concern.
Keep an eye on the sky after lunchtime. A brief downpour or rumble of thunder could reduce visibility quickly on I-74 and I-80.
Colder air surges in later this evening. Rain will mix with and change to snow, mainly north of a Williamsburg, Iowa to Dubuque line. In and around the Quad Cities, minor snow accumulation is possible, generally under an inch. Farther north, 3 to 5 inches could fall in advisory areas.
Roads may turn slick as temperatures drop toward 30 tonight. Wet pavement can refreeze, creating patchy icy spots. This is prime time for flash freezing in February.
Friday brings decreasing clouds and a high near 39. Friday night drops to 23 under partly cloudy skies. Saturday turns mostly sunny with a high near 36. Sunday cools to near 31 with partly sunny skies.
By early next week, sunshine continues with highs in the low 30s Monday. Then a warming trend builds. Highs climb into the upper 40s Tuesday and near 50 by midweek, offering hints of Spring Warmth.
