Fort Wayne, IN – The final day of the early summer heatwave is here, with heat advisories and excessive heat warnings expiring at 8 p.m. EDT tonight across Northeastern Indiana and Northwestern Ohio. High temperatures are expected to climb into the 90s, with heat indices reaching around 100 degrees, and peaking at 105 degrees in the most affected areas.

According to the US National Weather Service Northern Indiana, a cold front will sweep through the region tonight, bringing potential severe thunderstorms. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to enter the western half of the area tonight and move eastward into Sunday morning. The forecast indicates a likelihood of scattered strong to severe storms between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. EDT.

Storm intensity is expected to diminish as the system progresses eastward. However, there is high confidence in the occurrence of storms, though less confidence in their severity. The most significant hazard will be wind gusts ranging from 40 to 60 mph, with the possibility of small hail.

Residents are advised to monitor the forecast for the latest updates and stay indoors during the peak storm hours. The US National Weather Service suggests limiting outdoor activities, staying in the shade, wearing light-colored and lightweight clothing, and drinking plenty of water to stay cool today.

The heat indices could briefly return to around 100 degrees on Tuesday, depending on the amount of precipitation and cloud cover. Cooler temperatures are anticipated for Sunday through next week, with highs in the 70s and 80s.
