Chicago, IL – A significant heat wave is gripping the Chicago area, with temperatures and heat indices approaching 100°F. This hot and humid weather is expected to persist through Saturday, bringing potential health risks and a chance of thunderstorms later in the week.

According to the National Weather Service Chicago, the heat wave will peak midweek, with daily highs ranging from 89°F to 96°F and heat indices between 95°F and 100°F. Areas near Lake Michigan will see a slight reprieve on Thursday and Friday, with temperatures dipping to the mid-80s to low 90s. However, inland regions will continue to experience intense heat, with highs in the upper 80s to mid-90s.

Wednesday is forecasted to be the hottest day, with temperatures reaching up to 96°F and mainly north of I-88 seeing the highest chances of thunderstorms during the afternoon. Thursday and Friday will bring slightly cooler temperatures near the lake, but the heat will remain oppressive inland.

By Saturday, the temperature will rise again, hitting highs of 97°F with a 40-60% chance of thunderstorms north of I-80 during the afternoon. These storms could provide temporary relief but also pose risks such as lightning and localized flooding.

Residents are advised to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas if spending time outdoors. The National Weather Service emphasizes the importance of these precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.

With the heat wave expected to last until Saturday, it’s crucial for Chicagoans to remain vigilant and take necessary measures to stay safe during this period of extreme weather.
