Northwest Indiana, IN – An Air Quality Alert (Air Quality Action Day) is in effect today for northwest Indiana due to elevated ozone levels. The air quality is expected to be at unhealthy levels for sensitive groups, including individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses. Residents are advised to limit prolonged outdoor activity.

According to the US National Weather Service in Chicago, the alert is effective for Lake, Porter, Newton, Jasper, and LaPorte counties. The air quality index indicates high ozone levels, which can pose significant health risks to sensitive populations. The alert is in place through tonight.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) emphasizes that individuals with respiratory conditions, children, and the elderly should avoid strenuous outdoor activities. Residents are encouraged to stay indoors as much as possible and keep windows closed to reduce exposure to the poor air quality.
