Quad Cities, IA/IL — A flash flood watch is in effect for areas north of Highway 30 in Illinois and Iowa, as the National Weather Service (NWS) warns of severe weather, including potential tornadoes and hail. Heavy rainfall rates of one to two inches per hour are anticipated, increasing the risk of flash flooding in low-lying areas and along roadways.

According to the NWS Quad Cities office, the flood watch will continue until 10 PM on Saturday, with thunderstorms expected to deliver torrential downpours. Residents are advised to avoid driving through flooded waters and to seek higher ground if necessary.

In addition to the flash flooding threat, severe storms are forecasted for this afternoon and evening as a cold front moves through the region. These storms are likely to bring damaging winds, large hail, and the possibility of tornadoes, moving from the northwest towards the southeast at speeds of 30-40 MPH.

The NWS has issued a slight risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms across the entire outlook area, which includes cities such as Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, and Dubuque. The peak threat period for these severe weather events is between 3 PM and 9 PM. Residents should stay informed about weather updates and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
