Ann Arbor, MI – The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office has reported an uptick in phone and email scams targeting local residents.
According to a post by the Washtenaw Sheriff on Tuesday, scammers are impersonating Sheriff’s Office employees, asking for money, gift cards, or financial support under the threat of arrest. The scammers claim to be employees of the Sheriff’s Office and use the names, phone numbers, and email addresses of actual deputies. They instruct victims to send money or purchase gift cards, threatening jail time or arrest for non-compliance.
The Sheriff’s Office clarified it does not solicit funds in this manner and urged the public to verify any suspicious communications by contacting the Sheriff’s Office Metro Dispatch at 734-994-2911. They emphasized that no individual employee would request financial compensation or personal information from residents.
Residents of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and surrounding areas are advised to be cautious and not to share personal or financial information with these scammers. The Sheriff’s Office is committed to maintaining community safety and urges the public to report any scam attempts immediately.
By working together, the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office and the community can help prevent these scams and ensure the safety and security of all residents.
